Overview of Hyundai Santro
Hyundai Santro is among the cheapest cars in the brand’s Indian product portfolio. The first-generation Santro was introduced in India back in 1998. After 17 years of production, Hyundai decided to discontinue the India-spec Santro in 2015. Three years later, the Korean automaker took the domestic market by storm when it brought back the Santro in 2018. The second-gen Santro was a runaway success for the Korean automaker. Within less than one month of its launch, the Hyundai hatchback had registered an exceptional sales volume of 8,535 units, outselling the popular Tiago hatchback of the domestic carmaker, Tata Motors.
Currently, the Santro remains one of the best-selling cars in the Hyundai's lineup thanks to its sporty appearance, modern interior layout, excellent performance, and reasonable price. Under the strict BS6 emission norm, the Korean carmaker has recently given its tall-boy hatchback an upgrade. The new 2020 Santro is now available in four variants:
- Base-spec Era Executive
- Mid-spec Magna
- Mid-spec Sportz
- Top-spec Asta
In its latest avatar, the Santro comes with minor tweaks compared to the previous model. The most notable change is in the dimensions, where it measures longer and wider than the last-gen. What seems to differentiate the new Santro from the old model is its roomy interior space. In fact, the newly-launched Hyundai hatchback has set a new benchmark regarding its upmarket and feature-loaded cabin. Under the hood, it retains the standard 69PS/101Nm 1.1-litre Epsilon engine, albeit with a BS6 upgrade. Apart from that, Hyundai also offers the hatchback with a new CNG kit. While the Epsilon unit is mated to either a five-speed MT or five-speed AT, the CNG is offered with the MT gearbox only.
Along with the recent updates comes a hike in prices. The BS6-compliant Santro now comes at a premium price range of Rs 4.63 to Rs 6.31 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi), up by Rs 2.2 to 2.7 lakh compared to the last-gen. Previously, the Santro was priced between Rs 4.57 and 6.25 lakh (ex-showroom). The Santro continues to rival the likes of the Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, and the WagonR.
2 Hyundai Santro models under 5 lakhs
The MT-petrol Era Executive and the MT-petrol Magna are the two Hyundai cars under 5 lakhs. The price of each model is as follow:
- Hyundai Era Executive: Rs 4.63 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi)
- Hyundai Magna (MT-Petrol): Rs 4.63 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi)
Both versions of the Santro employ a premium cabin loaded with standard features such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a reverse camera, rear AC vents along with steering-mounted audio controls. In terms of safety, the two Santro models come equipped with a standard kit including a rear parking camera, driver and passenger airbag, front seatbelt pretensioners, ABS.
Powering the Era Executive and the Magna is the BS6-compliant 1.1-litre Epsilon engine. Transmission-wise, the base-spec Era Executive is offered with a single manual gearbox. While the mid-spec Magna comes with an optional CNG and AT transmission, the 5.09-lakh Magna is only available in a five-speed MT.
